Born on 29 June, 1918 in Williamsburg, Kentucky,USA; died on 8 Jan 2008 at Superior, Michigan, USA, aged 89.
He was the son of Thomas and
Charlotte Belcher.
On
17 August, 1938, he married
Ruby Mae Burcham, a nurse, in Kentucky.
He joined the faculty at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in 1946, where he taught biology and conducted research until his retirement in 1981.
His 1955 doctoral dissertation was 'A Revision of the Genus Erechtites' (University of Michigan).
He spent time researching in Australia in 1966 and contributed to taxonomic descriptions in the Flora of Australia.
His wife Ruby Mae Belcher (28/2/1915 - 21/2/2005) accompanied him to Australia and is co-collector of many herbarium specimens.
He was an authority on various members of
the Senecio genus (Asteraceae),
especially of Australia.
In addition to his
research and teaching at
EMU, he was deeply involved
in the conservation movement
in Michigan and was instrumental in the establishment
in the Sleeping Bear Dunes
National Park.
