1990-1994: Ph.D., Geology/Botany - University of Melbourne.
1992-2002: Senior Scientific Officer - British Antarctic Survey.
2002-2006: Senior Curator - Swedish Museum of Natural History.
He was Senior Curator within the Palaeobotany Department including a small research group. Research was focussed on Southern Hemisphere Mesozoic and Cenozoic flora history and the role that Antarctica played in the development of current day biogeographic patterns.
2006- : Chief Botanist and Director - Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.
As part of the senior executive team he is responsible for managing and leading the Plant Science and Biodiversity Division. The Division is the main scientific research group within the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. He also has responsibility for looking after the State Botanical Collection. The State Botanical Collection comprises the herbarium (1.5 million specimens) and the Library including rare books and artwork.
He has worked extensively in the Antarctic and more recently in South Africa and New Zealand concentrating on fossil floras from the Cretaceous and early Cenozoic. He also has interests in a number of extant groups including Proteaceae and Rutaceae and in integrating the results of molecular and morphological studies with information from the geological record.
