Kevin is a botanist and
ecologist who has lived in
the Illawarra district on the NSW
South Coast for more than 40 years [in 2023].
He has been studying a wide
range of ecological communities
for many years and is currently [2023]
working
projects throughout the region.
These include the vegetation on the
offshore islands, the flora associated
with various conservation reserves,
and the distribution and resilience
on
several
botanical
of our rare plant species, particularly
following catastrophic bushfires.
Kevin's detailed knowledge of the flora
has been gained through extensive field surveys across some of the South
Coast's most remote areas.
He has authored or co-authored several books on native
plant species, including 'Native Trees of Central Illawarra', 'Rainforests
of the llawarra District', and 'Native Trees of the NSW South Coast'.
He has
systematically investigated the fern flora occurring on the NSW South
Coast, a project he began in 2011 and culminated in the
production of 'South Coast Ferns' in 2023.
Kevin has written extensively on the vegetation of Norfolk Island, where
he has been a regular visitor since the early 2000s. He has undertaken
several landmark studies of the flora of Norfolk Island and nearby Phillip
Island, including reconstruction of the island's
original vegetation cover.
He has also written
'Allan Cunningham: Journal of a Botanist on
Norfolk Island in 1830'.
He is closely involved
with the rehabilitation of habitat on
The Five Islands off Port Kembla and
the regeneration of rainforest at
Minnamnurra Rainforest Centre in
Budderoo National Park.
