Barbara graduated in botany and zoology and worked for
many years with her husband John Wescar Rowland in agricultural research and ecology in
Southern Africa.
When the family moved to Western Australia in the
early 1980s, it was suggested that there was scope for a work on the
coastal vegetation.
Through their many tramps along the seashore, together with
research and consultation with local experts, she acquired a
detailed knowledge of the coastal plants of Western Australia.
With her daughter, Elizabeth Rippey, (who followed her later to Australia) she co-authored a couple of books in 1995; 'Plants of the Perth Coast and Islands' and 'Coastal Plants - Perth and the South-West Region', (UWA Press) with with Elizabeth doing the illustrations.
