Petiole presence

The presence or absence of a leaf stalk. For compound leaves, this character refers to the whole leaf, while individual leaflets may be stalked or sessile.

Present

The leaf is stalked. In some cases, the petiole is indistinct (particularly when leaves are linear), but presence may be indicated by an articulation between the leaf base and stem. Some phyllodinous taxa (such as Daviesia) have a strongly tapered and articulated leaf base (pseudo-petiole) which is treated as a true petiole.

Absent

The leaf lacks a petiole or petiole-like structure. Often the leaf base is apparently sheathing (decurrent) on the stem.
