Annual Report 1977-1978

The Canberra Botanic Gardens located on Black Mountain continues to attract large numbers of people. Attendance figures for 1977-78 exceeded 300,000 and there was a significant increase in the numbers of organised school visits. This year 6,800 student visitors were recorded, an increase of 2,400 over the previous year.

Complementary to its function of displaying Australian flora, the Botanic Gardens included in its 1977-78 program the exhibition ‘Australian Flora in Art’, a valuable collection lent by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Sydney.

The Botanic Gardens Herbarium identifies plant material and stores specimens of plant species collected throughout Australia. During 1977-78 the Herbarium acquired 6,750 more specimens, providing invaluable scientific material in this field.
